About us

WHO WE ARE

Youth in Federal Discourse (YFD) is a national, non-governmental, non-profit, and non-partisan youth-led organization dedicated to empowering young people in governance, lawmaking, and democratic participation. We believe that with over 40% of the population being youth, their voices must be heard and actively integrated into political and policy-making processes.

YFD engages youths in understanding parliamentary procedures, federalism, elections, civic engagement, and inclusive democracy. However, while youth remains our primary focus, our work extends beyond them to ensure wider societal impact. By simplifying complex governance structures and fostering informed discourse, we strive to create long-term systemic change.

Our initiatives include training programs, workshops, research, election observation, and policy advocacy, ensuring that young people are not just participants but drivers of meaningful transformation. Through collaborations with governmental and non-governmental partners, we bridge the gap between youth perspectives and national decision-making, helping shape a more inclusive and representative governance system.

HISTORY

Youth in Federal Discourse (YFD) was initiated in 2019. The founders came together to work on a common cause of engaging youths in understanding federalism. The new Constitution of Nepal was promulgated in 2015. Its implementation started with the subsequent election of local government, followed by the federal and provincial levels in 2017. Federalism was a new system of governance for Nepal. We had 7 different constitutions in 65 years. This meant an overhaul of the state’s working mechanisms every 9 years. We felt the need to consolidate the democratic process and redirect focus towards effective public delivery.  We identified the need to work over the next 10 years to enhance the understanding of the constitution, especially among youth. We recognised the need to promote active citizenship, inclusive governance, parliamentary system, elections and strengthening institutions. Thus, YFD came into light. We value the essence of collectivism and believe no change is sustainable without institutionalising the shared vision of collective voices.
